Minister’s Reflection– Jeffrey Lang

In Matthew 6, Jesus says:
Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding.
When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure – ‘play-actors’ I call them – treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get. When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it – quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.
Each of us is called to walk a fine line between living out our faith in public while being aware of our inner motives. As we pursue ways to serve and uplift those around us, at the same time, we are simultaneously challenged by Jesus to attend to our desire for approval. Our motivation ought to be ministering to others for the sake of helping, not to earn the accolades or approval of onlookers. Long ago, some described this calling as ‘disinterested benevolence.’
I don’t know that we can entirely remove every psychological motivation for doing good. Nonetheless, the real witness we should be concerned with as we go about living out our faith is the Divine. Our motive for helping other people is the love we might be able to share for love’s sake alone. The way Jesus frames it for us, the doing of good is its own reward. Not human approval, but the inner transformation that happens as we live into the example of God in Jesus Christ is our aim in the Christian life.
